Heterotrophic Dinoflagellate Growth and Grazing Rates Reduced by Microplastic Ingestion

چکیده
Microplastics are ubiquitous contaminants in marine ecosystems worldwide, threatening fisheries production, food safety, and human health. Ingestion of microplastics by fish large zooplankton has been documented, but there few studies focusing on single-celled predators, including heterotrophic dinoflagellates. In laboratory experiments, the dinoflagellate species Oxyrrhis marina Gyrodinium sp. readily ingested both algal prey polystyrene microplastic spheres (2.5–4.5 μm), while Protoperidinium did not ingest microplastics. Compared to algae-only fed dinoflagellates, those that had growth rates reduced 25–35% over course 5 days. Reduced resulted a 30–50% reduction secondary production as measured predator biomass. were also treatments. When given mixture prey, O. displayed higher selectivity for than Observations coastal ocean showed phylogenetically diverse taxa beads, thus dinoflagellates could contribute trophic transfer levels. The results this study may suggest continued increase pollution lead protists due ingestion, altering flow energy matter microbial webs.

Growth, Grazing, and Starvation Survival in Three Heterotrophic Dinoflagellate Species.
To assess the effects of fluctuating prey availability on predator population dynamics and grazing impact on phytoplankton, we measured growth and grazing rates of three heterotrophic dinoflagellate species-Oxyrrhis marina, Gyrodinium dominans and Gyrodinium spirale-before and after depriving them of phytoplankton prey. All three dinoflagellate species survived long periods (> 10 d) without alg...

Microplastics (i.e. plastic fragments <5 mm in diameter) are a widespread form of contamination in marine ecosystems around the globe (Moore 2008). Coastal ecosystems, such as inshore coral reefs, are likely to be particularly heavily impacted by microplastics because these contaminants often enter the marine environment through fragmentation of larger plastic items from terrestrial sources (Th...
متن کاملGrazing of heterotrophic dinoflagellate Noctiluca scintillans (Mcartney) Kofoid on Gymnodinium catenatum Graham.
A dinoflagellate bloom ("red tide" event) dominated by the toxic Gymnodinium catenatum Graham (Gymnodiniales, Dinophyceae; 99.7%) and the noxious Noctiluca scintillans (Mcartney) Kofoid (Noctilucaceae, Dinophyceae; 0.3%) was observed in Bahia de Mazatlán Bay, México, on 24-26 January 2000. Photographic and microscopic analysis of samples during such an event, allowed us to collect evidence of a...

To explore the feeding ecology of the Pfiesteria-like dinoflagellate (PLD) Luciella masanensis (GenBank Accession no. AM050344, previously Lucy), we investigated the feeding behavior and the kinds of prey species that L. masanensis fed on and determined its growth and ingestion rates of L. masanensis when it fed on the dinoflagellate Amphidinium carterae and an unidentified cryptophyte species ...
متن کاملDiel periodicity of grazing by heterotrophic nanoflagellates influenced by prey cell properties and intrinsic grazing rhythm
We investigated the effect of diel variation in cell properties of picoplankton prey and the intrinsic grazing rhythm of heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) on the diel periodicity of HNF grazing. To achieve this aim, 2-point dilution experiments with short incubation time were performed over 24 h in the South China Sea and Hong Kong (HK) coastal water to assess the prey cell properties and HNF...
